Project details:

APP Develops Sydney Airport to take the New Airbus A380

The Airbus A380 aircraft is a big aeroplane; and when some of the world’s major operators announced they would be using the A380 to operate out of Sydney on their long haul flights, Sydney Airports Corporation realised the existing taxiways were incapable of carrying this larger aircraft.

APP was invited to assist with the development project – and immediately saw the complexities.

“We had to strengthen the taxiway,” says David Rann, APP Project Director. “This included the bridge of one taxiway over General Holmes Drive, which is part of the major road system around Sydney Airport.”

There was a non-negotiable deadline – the arrival of the first A380. To achieve this, APP worked closely with the SACL’s own project team, and drew in a number of specialised consultants to design a development process that would meet the deadline.

A strategy was devised to streamline the program of procurement and construction, within the additional constraint of working only at night. This involved high level discussions with suppliers to ensure that materials were delivered on a just-in-time basis, directly to the point they were needed.

“We were committed to the A380 deadline, but every night was a deadline, too, because the contractor had to complete works and sweep the site clean by the time the first plane arrived, every morning,” Rann says. “All the way through, the client was delighted.”
