Congratulations to Nicholas de Gorter, Daniel Jukic, Jennifer Young and Jessica Zhang from our Sydney office who have completed the 2016 APP Graduate Program.

Since joining APP at the beginning of 2016, our graduates completed four rotations over a 10 month period to gain experience across a diverse range of projects and understand different areas of the business.

Now Assistant Project Managers, we asked each of the former graduates to reflect on their time during the program and what they gained from the experience.

Nicholas de Gorter

Tell us a bit about yourself

Originally from Melbourne but grew up in Sydney, I studied a Bachelor of Civil Engineering at Sydney University and graduated at the end of 2015.

What is your role at APP and when did you join?

I started at APP in January in 2016 as a Graduate Project Manager. Having now completed the Graduate Program, I am now an Assistant Project Manager. Up until the end of 2016, I continued to work on the Marina Project in Elizabeth Bay and a multi-storey car park in Parramatta. Now that we are in the new year I have started working with BU205 which does a lot of work with Health Infrastructure. I am currently working on projects in Tweed and Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospitals.

Why did you choose APP’s Graduate Program?

I was attracted to the culture at APP and saw it as a fantastic place to learn and develop myself as a professional. To this day, I still enjoy everything the company has to offer and see it as a fantastic place to work thanks to the people you get to work alongside.

How has APP helped you grow your career?

APP, through the Graduate Program have shown me the various aspects of Project Management, exposing me to Project Delivery, Urban Development, Independent Certification through our Infrastructure division and Commercial Property through APP’s subsidiary CI. As a result I have a more complete view of the industry as a whole, and have been able to own my work and strive to take on bigger challenges.

What has been the highlight of your time at APP?

The whole experience has been a highlight but I would say the occasions where the opportunity has been presented where I have had to take the reins of a project during the absence of a more senior project manager or some other circumstance. During these times you are really able to test yourself and I found it to be a very enjoyable experience.

What advice would you give to others wanting to join APP’s Graduate Program?

Just be yourself, the process is really enjoyable and it’s just our way of telling you about us and at the same time getting to know you. I highly recommend applying for the program if you are interested in Client Side Project Management.

Daniel Jukic

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m Sydney born and bred, having studied a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hons 1) at UNSW. Prior to joining APP I worked part time for a developer for five years and as an Engineer for two years during my degree.

What is your role at APP and when did you join?

I joined APP in early January 2016 as a Graduate Project Manager. Since then I’ve been promoted to Assistant Project Manager, with responsibility managing my own projects.

Why did you choose APP’s Graduate Program?

I chose APP’s Graduate Program for the diversity of projects and experiences. I saw an opportunity to broaden my learning in a condensed time period while enabling me to define my career path.

How has APP helped you grow your career?

The contributing factor to my growth has been APP’s trust. I have been given many opportunities to challenge myself and take ownership of my work. My colleagues have provided me with guidance and autonomy and as such I’ve developed into a better Project Manager.

What has been the highlight of your time at APP?

Working on the Sydney Light Rail project has definitely been a highlight. Being exposed to a $2.1B project with such a high level of coordination, planning and detail has given me invaluable experience.

What advice would you give to others wanting to join APP’s Graduate Program?

If you want a diverse, interesting and well-rounded experience APP’s Graduate Program is an excellent opportunity. You will learn, develop skills and gain exposure to clients from the onset.

Jennifer Young

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m Australian-born-Korean who over the years, has split my time between Australia and New Zealand. Originally living in Sydney, my family relocated to Auckland for 11 years before moving back to Sydney then eventually back to Auckland where I finished my high school education. In 2010, I was accepted into the University of Sydney to study Civil Engineering, which meant moving back to Sydney. And this time, I made sure this was the very last move between the two countries.

What is your role at APP and when did you join?

I joined APP as a Graduate in the 2016 Graduate Program. Through this program, I was given the opportunity to work on many large-scale projects within Project Management, Urban Development, Infrastructure, and Property, all at varying stages of the project life cycle. Having spent a few months in each rotation, I was exposed to areas I would have never considered and at the same time, I was able to further explore my keen interests for Infrastructure. Now, I have moved onto becoming Assistant Project Engineer on the Canberra Light Rail Project.

Why did you choose APP’s Graduate Program?

A great company culture and strong support for staff well-being is what got my attention.

How has APP helped you grow your career?

Going through APP’s Graduate Program definitely helped me grow into becoming a confident Assistant Project Manager. Working on different projects and with different people has taught me to value teamwork, time management, and a healthy mentality. And thanks to the many networking events I was able to attend, I’ve learnt to step out of my comfort zone and make a presence for myself.

What has been the highlight of your time at APP?

The biggest highlights would be becoming co-Treasurer of the Chapter Council at The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) NSW with Jessica Zhang and going on my first business trip to Canberra.

What advice would you give to others wanting to join APP’s Grad Program?

My advice would be to Own It! Strive! Respect! Do What’s Right! These are the core values of APP that convey a professional and mature approach in everything you do.

Jessica Zhang

Tell us a bit about yourself

I was born overseas in China and I came to Australia with my family when I was 12. At year 8 I made up my mind that I wanted to be an engineer, but just didn’t know what kind of engineering I liked the most, I mean there’s so many! It wasn’t until 4 years later when I was visiting UNSW where I discovered Civil Engineering with Architecture was the degree for me.

What is your role at APP and when did you join?

I joined APP January 2016 as a Graduate Engineer and am now an Assistant Project Manager.

Why did you choose APP’s Graduate Program?

APP’s graduate programme is very unique in the current market. Most programmes last up to 2-3 years, but APP’s graduate program is roughly 1 year. This means not only do you get the chance to experience each business sector, but the graduates don’t have to wait years to settle into a team to work on their favourite project. I love to just dig into a project and grow with it, if you are like me, APP’s graduate program is perfect. And do I need to mention the diverse culture here at APP, they even accepted an rabbit obsessed individual like me.

How has APP helped you grow your career?

I had the opportunity to work on some amazing projects such as Sydney Light Rail, Moore College and  Barangaroo. It's not just about the projects though, APP provides a great platform for the graduates to learn from professionals already established in their field.  Here at APP, it’s not all just about work. My managers always encourages me to attend social events such as the Property Council Australia's Future Directions Cocktail party where I get to mingle with other professionals in the industry. Our amazing HR team also keeps us busy with training programs that are tailored to suit each individual’s growth.

What has been the highlight of your time at APP?

Every day is a highlight! Through APP I get to work with NAWIC (National Women in Construction). I am now co-treasurer for their NSW division.

What advice would you give to others wanting to join APP’s Graduate Program?

The Graduate Program is like a journey, enjoy every moment of it like I did.
