    As 2016 comes to a close, we'd like to take the time to reflect on how far some of our graduates have come since joining APP.

    We sat down with Esther Reis and Matthew Nola from our Victorian office to find out about their journey and experiences in the graduate program. 

    Esther Reis 

    Tell us about yourself – what are your qualifications and where did you study?

    I’m originally from Canberra but I moved to the big smoke to study a Bachelor of Applied Science (Project Management) (Honours) at RMIT.

    What is your role at APP and when did you join?

    I joined APP in November 2015 as a part of the graduate program, initially joining the events business unit as part of the corporate facilities team for the 2016 Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix. Since my time on the Grand Prix team, I have transitioned to client side project management within business unit 303. The Business Unit covers a wide service offerings with strengths in residential, commercial, educational and aged care. Having recently completed my time as a graduate, I am now working as an Assistant Project Manager on an exciting commercial project in Docklands. 

    How has APP helped you grow your career?

    APP’s graduate program has exposed me to a variety of sectors including events, retail, commercial, education and residential. This range of exposure has helped me gain a broad range of knowledge and skills. The program has also helped me understand the importance of ‘soft skills’ in consultancy, such as relationship management and the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders. I have been lucky enough to work closely with senior members of APP and other high profile external consulting firms, which has been integral to my professional development. 

    What has been the highlight of your time at APP?

    The first project I worked on where I helped to successfully deliver the 2016 Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix was hugely rewarding for me. I felt a true sense of accomplishment and pride seeing such a large complex project come together. I love that I get the opportunity to be exposed to high profile, fast-paced projects and make a meaningful difference.  I also thoroughly enjoy the plethora of extra curriculum activities I get to be a part of, such as corporate sporting teams, company social events and external networking opportunities.  

    Matthew Nola

    Tell us a bit about yourself – what are your qualifications and where did you study?

    I studied a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Infrastructure management (Hons) at RMIT whilst working in the industry for my final two years.

    What is your role at APP and when did you join?

    My role at APP is currently as a graduate, however, I’m operating as an Assistant Project Manager on all three of my current commissions.

    How has APP helped you grow your career?

    APP has helped my career immensely by providing a vast array of opportunities through roles on projects across the education, commercial and residential sectors. The autonomy to ‘own’ my role on each commission which APP has allowed me to have has further boosted my confidence and wealth of knowledge in an accelerated time frame. I consider this to be the best trait of working at APP.

    What has been the highlight of your time at APP?

    When referring back to a highlight of my time at APP, it is hard to look past my time on the 2016 Grand prix at the beginning of the year. This project was my first at APP and working alongside such a tight team of people with great camaraderie and to deliver a world class event, it definitely was a memorable milestone. The other notable achievement would be the delivery of the ‘Low Rise Refurbishment’ tranche of works at 360 Collins Street on behalf of the Dexus property group. This was the first project where I worked through the entire delivery phase and navigated through the handover process where I gained an enormous amount of knowledge. Personally, nothing provides a better understanding than attacking a project head on and making a few mistakes along the way, rather than conservatively tracking along. This is what the 360 Collins Street project has been able to provide for me.

    Myer Sydney City transformed its entire top level into a magical retail experience and destination called “Wonderland by Myer”, which opened on Friday 4th November.

    Wonderland by Myer is an ‘out of this world’ experience where customers can immerse themselves in a theatrical world of toys, childrenswear, gifting, events, and food.

    Customers are welcomed to Wonderland via the interactive ‘Rocket Ship Lift’ which travels direct from Myer’s ground floor to level 6. The immersive experience can also be accessed by taking the escalator from floors below through a variety of illuminated feature cloud installations.

    The Melbourne APP team were appointed by Myer to provide project management services from planning through to the demolition, build and fit-out. Working closely with The Retail Group (TRG, Architectural Services) and IdeaWorks (Creative Design) in delivering the project, the conversion of the 4,500sqm floor was completed over a 6 week period.

    In November GPT’s transformation of Melbourne Central’s Lower Ground space won first place in the Retail category at the 2016 Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) held in Sydney. Launched by inside Interior Design Review in 2003, the awards celebrate the best of Australian interior and product design, attracting hundreds of entries from designers all across Australia.

    The ‘Melbourne Central Lower Ground Refresh’ project is a memorable and playful space drawing on tropes of industrial abstraction. The refurbished space incorporates numbered and coloured ceiling portals, mirrors and video art, designed with the intention to create an extension of Melbourne’s laneway art and culture.

    The exhibition of interactive video art, known as Melbourne Art Loop, features more than 30 artists, appearing simultaneously on fifteen state-of-the-art LCD screens and five overhead projector portals.

    The project forms part of an overall revitalisation of the Melbourne Central Tower that aims to modernise the building with the latest technologies, improve the customer experience, and create a unique and lively space for visitors to shop, dine and explore. 

    The space won the IDEA Award for demonstrating a good understanding of all of the facets that contribute to creating a memorable shopping experience. Judge’s considerations included the brief, concept, product display, brand translation, experiential quality, spatial acumen, parameters, decoration, lighting, sustainability, innovation and originality of design outcome.

    APP was appointed as Project Manager in October 2015 to lead and deliver this refurbishment project and we are delighted with this outcome.

    The award winning project will be published online and profiled in a special IDEA 2016 edition of inside magazine.

    We're delighted to announce the internal promotions of four of our Project Managers in our Perth team; Josh Grafton, Claire Lynch, Dan Herbert and Cuong Ly.

    These promotions are the result of the individuals demonstrating their ability to act in the capacity of their new roles for some time and recognition of their efforts. Not only are they doing a great job and providing quality service to our clients, they’re also contributing to our business either operationally, through business development or through our people and culture.

    Josh Grafton – Project Manager

    Josh joined APP as an Assistant Project Manager in 2014 to assist in the project management, design management and contract management of the ALDI Distribution Centre in Jandakot. Josh has further developed his skills overseeing a variety of projects and will continue to apply his industrial and commercial sector experience in his role as a Project Manager.

    Claire Lynch – Project Manager

    Since joining APP in 2014 as an Assistant Project Manager, Claire has been engaged in the master planning, design and construction of multiple commercial and retail projects. With a double degree in interior architecture and business management, her technical background enables her to add particular value during the master-planning and design stages of her projects with a pragmatic awareness of commercial constraints. She takes a personal approach to every project, building a rapport with stakeholders and taking the time to understand each person’s perspective, priorities and concerns.

    Dan Herbert – Senior Project Manager

    Dan joined APP as a Project Manager in 2014 and has more than 8 years’ experience across a broad range of industry sectors including commercial, aviation, healthcare and residential, working with clients such as KPMG, Investa Property Group and Perth Airport. His experience encompasses both the design and construction stages of projects and has proven particularly skilled in managing large-scale projects and complex construction contracts.

    Cuong Ly – Senior Project Manager

    Cuong joined APP as a Project Manager in 2015, where he began work on the delivery of critical projects for the Western Australia Projects Division. Cuong has previously practised as an architect and client side Project management for residential and retail developers.  He particularly enjoys adding design management and procurement value during the design phases, and thrives on the pace, challenge and intensity of construction and delivery.

    We are delighted to announce APP's success at The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) WA Awards for Excellence on Thursday 17 November, 2016.

    Congratulations to Jill Fraser from our WA office who was announced as the winner of the NAWIC (WA) Crystal Vision Award. The award recognises and celebrates an exceptional woman who has not only forged her own career, but has also encouraged the development of other women within the construction industry.

    With qualifications in civil engineering and construction management, Project Director Jill joined APP in 2010 with experience spanning the residential, industrial, commercial, aviation and infrastructure sectors.

    Jill is also a member of the Property Council of Australia’s Women and Diversity Committee where she is actively involved in championing networking, learning and mentoring opportunities and promoting the positive influences women have on the sector. In 2014, she won the WA Property Council’s Future Directions Award and was also selected as a mentee the following year.

    Jill won the Crystal Vision Award for her ongoing and significant commitment to advancing and furthering the interests of women in the construction industry and for her contribution to the industry as a whole.

    We’d also like to congratulate Michelle Wunderlich, Vanessa Growden and Claire Lynch from our WA office. Both Michelle and Vanessa were shortlisted for the NAWIC WA Outstanding Contribution to Construction Award, and Claire was nominated in the Young Achiever Award category.

    After spending more than six years on the extensive redesign of Sydney airport as a project leader in Architecture, Michelle joined APP in 2014 as a Project Manager with high expertise in the aviation field. Since joining APP she has continued building on her experience, participating in the Perth Terminal 1, Domestic Pier and International Departures Expansion Project and being selected into the airport’s internal project management team to continue on this large and complex project.

    Vanessa has been a Project Manager with APP since 2010, bringing with her eight years of technical design experience gained during her time practicing as an architect. Vanessa specialises in aviation, with her latest major projects including the new Terminal 1, Domestic Pier and International Departures Expansion Project, Terminal WA (T2) new build and Terminal 3 Perth Airport Redevelopment.

    Claire joined APP through our graduate program in 2014, on completion of a double degree in interior architecture and business management. In her role as Project Manager, Claire focuses on the commercial and retail sectors and her technical background enables her to add particular value during the master-planning and design stages of her projects.

    We’re delighted to announce that Simone O’Connor has been promoted to Project Director.

    Simone has successfully project managed a diverse range of projects and clients including the Newcastle Airport, Diocese of Maitland Newcastle, UGL Rail Facilities, Anglican Care Residential Aged Care Facilities, HMRI Feasibility and Capacity Studies, Civil Remediation Projects and various Health Projects for Hunter New England Health. Simone recently completed Kilpatrick Court Residential Aged Care Facility for Anglican Care.

    Simone’s point of difference is the value she adds during the front-end planning and design phases of her projects, developing high-level strategy, identifying and managing core risks and setting up cost plans, key processes, programs and governance structures to ensure effective program management. During the construction and delivery phases she provides expert high-level supervision and client liaison. For this reason Simone is valued by her clients for her up-front, open communication style and ability to strategize on the run, make swift, effective decisions and find efficient solutions to complex problems.

    Simone is also valued within the Newcastle business community as a committee member of Women in Building & Associated Services (WIBAS). Simone’s promotion coincided with her leading a tour through the University of Newcastle’s New Space for WIBAS last week.

    We congratulate Simone on this well-deserved promotion.

    Congratulations to Laura Murray from our Melbourne office who was elected as President of the Planning Institute of Australia (Victoria Chapter).

    Laura was first elected to the committee in 2015 and has held the role of Women’s Planning Network (WPN) Convenor since 2013.  

    As a Senior Associate at APP, this is an outstanding achievement for Laura and clear recognition of her standing and reputation within Melbourne’s Planning Sector. The PIA provides an excellent platform to continue the growth of our Planning Services, which Laura has played an instrumental role in progressing that part of our business in recent months.

    Laura joined APP as a Senior Associate in 2015 and has more than 12 years’ experience in statutory and strategic planning for public and private clients in both Australia and the UK. Her expertise encompasses growth management frameworks, structure plans and policy review, in addition to large-scale, complex statutory projects across a wide range of sectors, including national retail and petroleum rollouts, fast food developments, high-density mixed-use, multi-unit residential, heritage, retirement living developments and waste recovery centres.

    In her role as President, Laura will be responsible for championing the PIA’s activities and will lead and support the development of high quality planning professionals throughout Victoria.  

    Congratulations to Laura on this significant achievement.

    APP recently hosted a group of Chinese Delegates from the Shandong Province to Brisbane looking to invest in projects, infrastructure and opportunities we have in Queensland and around the Country. The delegates were able to hear from a number of industry experts from APP, Brisbane Marketing and BlueMount Capital on the opportunities available to them.

    Paul Spinolo, APP National General Manager of Clients and Markets was positive about the growth in Queensland. “We are seeing a number of large scale projects ready to take off in Queensland and the local government is looking for investment from foreign entities. The opportunity lies in the relationships that can be built between the investors and government to see these projects come to fruition.”

    The inland rail from Melbourne to Brisbane will have a huge impact on the movement of freight within Australia and hubs like Toowoomba will then become major centres for international freight forwarding stimulating foreign investment and growth in the region.

    The delegates represented a number of industries looking to invest in Australia including heavy industry, textiles, packaging, technology, materials and property investment.

    The Northern Territory Government has appointed APP Corporation to provide their Project Management Office (PMO) for the Operational Commissioning of the new Palmerston Regional Hospital (PRH).  This is an exciting opportunity for APP to further develop our knowledge and add to our experience of commissioning major health projects.

    The Palmerston Regional Hospital is currently being constructed by Lendlease in partnership with Northern Territory Government. The hospital is a jointly funded project between the Commonwealth and the Northern Territory Government and will provide hospital-based services to the Palmerston and Greater Darwin Regions. The new hospital will also support the Royal Darwin Hospital through the provision of emergency, elective surgery, low acuity inpatient, low risk maternity and specialist outpatient services.

    As the PMO, APP will provide project support and oversight on the delivery of seven major work streams. This includes the hospital operations (clinical, non-clinical and facility wide), information communication technology, the workforce, communication and community engagement, corporate, infrastructure and the activation of the hospital.  APP has had extensive experience in operational commissioning of hospitals throughout Australia, including the Gold Coast University Hospital, Hervey Bay Digital Hospital for Uniting Care and Royal Adelaide.

    APP’s General Manager in Queensland, Nick Davy, says  “We are delighted to be part of this exciting project and the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the Territory by drawing upon our experience in hospital operational commissioning.  We have assembled a strong team that is committed to delivering a seamless transition from construction completion through to operational readiness of the new hospital”.

    Construction of the $60M Armidale Hospital redevelopment project has officially started, with the project team turning the first sod earlier this month.  

    The project team was joined at the ceremony by Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall, Hunter New England Health, Health Infrastructure, builders and infrastructure designers, planners, staff and community leaders.

    APP was appointed as Project Manager for the redevelopment project by Health Infrastructure NSW in October last year, and is part of the lead design team which also includes Wilde and Woollard.

    The state-of-the-art facility will comprise a mix of new and redeveloped facilities including a new emergency department, a new critical care unit, new in-patient ward, new operating theatres and a new sterilizing unit.

    The four-storey facility will confirm Armidale as a world-class regional health precinct, providing outstanding clinical and community health services to a community of 150,000 people across the region.

    Construction of the new building is expected to be completed in late 2017 with refurbishment works to follow.

    After almost 10 years operating from an office in the Southern Highlands, we have moved our Southern NSW base to Wollongong as part of a strategic growth plan to secure and deliver regional projects.

    The Southern NSW team, led by Kirk Bolte, are enjoying their new surroundings and the vibrancy offered by the Illawarra and South coast.  Kirk comments: “Whilst we’ve managed a variety of projects around Wollongong over the last 5 or more years, including HMAS Albatross at Nowra, the award-winning Nan Tien Institute and projects for the Catholic Education Office, there is an unprecedented interest in the Illawarra. We see major opportunities relating to residential, aged care and retirement sectors, plus expansion of primary and tertiary education facilities. It’s a logical progression for us to be closer to these opportunities and to provide existing and future clients immediate access to all the skills, services and resources that APP has to offer.”

    Kirk and the team are also appreciative of the welcome received by the local community, including client Kiama Council and their General Manager Michael Forsyth. Says Kirk: “We are very much locals in the Illawarra and share a common goal of delivering first class facilities for this region.”

    APP will continue operate in the Highlands to service our existing and long standing clients in that region. “Our geographic reach extends from south-west Sydney to the Southern Tablelands and Riverina, so the Highlands remain a good base for us” says Kirk. Some of the projects being managed by APP’s Southern NSW team include commercial and retail developments, defence establishments, education, aged care and residential projects.

    Kiama Council’s new Aged Care Centre of Excellence project reached a design milestone recently, with the first stage Concept Design being presented to Council for approval. APP is managing the delivery for the $72M project located on the site of Kiama’s original Hospital established in 1887.

    The Aged Care Centre of Excellence combines 134 aged care accommodation beds with a mix of assisted-living apartments, 2-bed and 1-bed independent living apartments, a community hall, meeting room facilities and the refurbishment of the 100 year old Barroul House to a café/restaurant and community facilities.

    The project marks a significant investment for Kiama, with in excess of 200 jobs expected to be created during the course of construction and approximately 60 permanent positions located within the completed facilities. Kiama Council is intent on providing a high-quality facility for the community that represents value for money. Michael Forsyth, General Manager of Kiama Council says “APP was appointed to the project by Kiama Council following a competitive tender process based on their extensive experience in within the Aged Care sector and the fact that they have a national capability with a local base in the Illawarra. We are confident that APP will add value throughout the delivery process”.

    Kirk Bolte, APP’s Project Director on the project says: “APP is delighted to be partnering with Kiama Council to assist in delivering this landmark facility and it reinforces our commitment to expanding APP’s presence in the Illawarra. We will encourage the use of local project participants provided that Council’s governance requirements can be maintained and a value-add to the project can be demonstrated”.

    With all consultants now appointed on the project, demolition and remediation of the hospital site will commence in February 2017 and the Head Contractor for the construction will be tendered in January 2017.

    Friday 14 October represented the culmination of some serious effort by APP staff around the country, when the final event for the national Redkite Corporate Quiz took place in the grand ballroom of Sydney’s The Westin Hotel.  The Quiz attracted over 500 people, with long-time supporter and host Adam Spencer joining other celebrities to donate their time on the night to raise funds for families facing childhood and youth cancer.

    This year was special for two reasons:  a record $1,166,500 was raised collectively across all 4 quiz events and the Sydney Quiz marked the 20 year anniversary for APP as the National Organising Sponsor.   

    The Melbourne and Sydney Quiz events were particularly successful, thanks to the generosity of the attendees who smashed the targets by $35,000 in Melbourne and a whopping $100,000 in Sydney.

    For our part, we would like to thank all the companies and businesses, including some of our clients, who have supported the Quiz along the 20-year journey by either taking a table or donating an auction prize.  We also say a big thank you to all the APPers who’ve assisted in the Quiz production or volunteered on the night in Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle.

    The Sacred Heart Mission redevelopment program is off and running. Having met with the Project Working Group, members of the Board and the consultant team, we’ve generated and issued the first tender package for what will be a 2-stage project.

    Stage 1B, currently out to market, will consist of enabling works that include a new on-grade carpark, bridge link between two buildings at level 1, a new reception and some minor reconfiguration of internal spaces. Works are expected to commence on site in November. Stage 2A and B consists of a significant expansion of the existing aged care facility and is continuing through the design and tender process. Works to these stages will commence in March 2017 with completion scheduled for February 2019.

    The redevelopment programme represents a $25M investment by several funding partners including the State Government, the Catholic Church, and various other philanthropic organisations who recognise the need for quality facilities to respond to a growing need for aged care accommodation. The Sacred Heart Mission aged care facility located at 101 Grey Street St Kilda provides much needed support to those less fortunate than ourselves, so we’re extremely proud to be associated with such a noble organisation, and are very much invested in delivering a great outcome for Project 101 during the course of the next couple of years.

    The Chadstone extension was officially opened last week to an eager crowd. Featuring an impressive new gridshell roof, an expanded offering of luxury brands, more dining options and a state-of-the-art Hoyts digital cinema complex, Chadstone has further cemented its reputation as the Fashion Capital.

    The opening proceeded according to schedule with a final 48-hr push to complete finishing touches and merchandising of the stores.

    APP was appointed by Vicinity Centres to provide tenancy coordination services on a secondment basis for the $560M redevelopment. The APP team supplemented the existing Vicinity Centres team based on site for the duration of the development being fully integrated into the broader Vicinity Centres team.

    K1 Residences at K1 Union Street by Optimus Developments is due to bring a new standard of luxury living to Melbourne with 360 degree views for each apartment.

    Located at the top end of St Kilda Rd, the development comprises 13 levels, featuring one luxuriously-sized apartment per floor where residents will enjoy views of the city, Albert Park, Port Phillip Bay and the Botanical Gardens.

    Optimus Developments brings their European perspective to this development with a new, unique offering to the Melbourne market.

    APP was initially engaged to prepare a due diligence report on the feasibility of the project and are now providing project management services.

    With the initial design phase underway, we’re looking forward to being a part of a truly unique residential development for Melbourne.

    Brisbane’s ibis Styles Elizabeth Street property has won a national award for Best Economy Hotel at this year’s Hotel Management Awards for Hotel and Accommodation Excellence. 

    Mat Finch (General Manager, ibis Styles) and Andrew Nehme (Director, Action Group Australia) attended the awards night in Sydney and are delighted with this recognition, given that the Hotel has only been operating for six months.

    ibis Styles Elizabeth Street Brisbane opened in March 2016 after two years of development, with the initial design process undertaken in Melbourne by APP’s Joshua Taylor, and the delivery managed locally in Brisbane by APP’s Crystal Gray.

    APP acted as the Project Manager and Superintendent for the project on behalf of Action Hotels, and worked closely with Accor’s operational team to deliver the new high-rise hotel with 368 rooms over 26 floors with fantastic views of Brisbane River, Southbank, and the CBD.

    APP is pleased to announce our appointment as Project Manager for the planning of the $30M upgrade of Inverell Hospital, situated 200km north of Tamworth. The project will be managed by APP’s Northern NSW team, who’ve established a solid reputation for delivering major regional projects across the Hunter and Northern Districts of NSW.

    Inverell Hospital is a 63-bed district hospital and is part of the Hunter New England Health’s clinical network with Tamworth and Armidale Hospitals, both of which have undergone significant transformation using APP’s project management expertise.

    The hospital currently provides a range of inpatient, outpatient and community health services including Emergency Services, Maternity, Day Surgery, Theatres and Recovery, Paediatrics, Ambulatory Care and Dental. Non-clinical services include Education & Training, Staff Accommodation, Mortuary and HealthShare services.

    The upgrade will provide new maternity facilities, ambulatory care, an emergency department, a GP clinic, inpatient beds (including paediatrics), perioperative services, pharmacy, dental and areas for education and training.

    The project is fast paced with the business case for the project due by the end of October, and the design finalised by mid-2017.  The Business Case will be submitted to the NSW Government to secure the funding for the project delivery.

    APP has been appointed by joint owners Eureka Funds Management and Investa Commercial Property Fund (ICPF) to manage the Stage One redevelopment of the iconic QV1 precinct in Perth.  The original Harry Seidler designed building was completed in 1991. This Perth landmark is being repositioned by Hassell Architects to compete effectively in the commercial market. 

    APP’s engagement is to manage the design and construction of works including:

    • New ground floor retail precinct
    • Premium grade 'end of trip' facilities
    • A new childcare centre for the tenants
    • Forward works including the services upgrade and structural modifications in preparation for the future Stage Two new building adjacent to QV1.

    The QV1 redevelopment will also feature an Oculus, an architectural glazed circular enclosure with a central opening.

    Stage One design is well advanced, with works expected to complete in late 2017.

    Congratulations to our NorthernNSW office, recognised at the NSW Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) awards in Sydney.  APP won a Project Management Achievement Award in the Regional Projects category for the University of Newcastle's Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources' (NIER) new Research building.  APP has been managing the delivery of NIER's world-class research facilities over several years, which on completion will bring together leading researchers across multiple disciplines to undertake innovation research for next generation energy and distribution solutions.  This latest research building comprises multiple workstations, offices, amenities, store rooms and carparking.  

    We congratulate Johannes, Pat and Roger for their outstanding efforts in winning the award on behalf of APP.
