Project details:

The NSW Central Coast’s population explosion over the last decade has required an expansion of infrastructure services to meet growing demand.  Ausgrid, a major energy supplier to the region, had a number of support depots across the region which required consolidation to deliver a more cost-effective asset management and to service their customers more efficiently.  Existing sites were congested, with limited parking for over 220 office and field crews, workshops and storage for infrastructure components including electricity poles and transformers.  The sites were also increasingly encroached upon by residential development.

The solution was a new Depot, constructed on a greenfield site and designed to provide for future expansion as well as an improved working environment for staff.  APP’s role as Project Manager and Superintendent provided Ausgrid with the surety that their facility would be delivered in line with budget and programme.   We acknowledged early that stakeholder co-ordination and management was vital during the design phase in order to encompass all the Ausgrid functional requirements within the project budget.  This meant not only managing the expectations of the client, but also ensuring the managing contractor encapsulated the requirements of the functional brief into their design.

One critical issue for the project team was the previously unidentified high level of site remediation due to asbestos contamination, which was resolved through APP’s recommendation to contractually split the works into the main depot and the road upgrade.  In this way the client’s requirement to commence operation in line with the contractual completion date was met and the local council’s DA design conditions for the road upgrade were achieved.

APP also managed the smooth relocation of the existing facilities from three sites into the new depot.
