    BHP Newcastle Stage 2 Remediation

Project details:

Newcastle's giant BHP site, which once dominated the city skyline, has been undergoing a transformation under the guidance of Hunter Development Corporation.  In 2010 APP was engaged as the Contract Managers for the delivery of the $40M Stage 2 Remediation, to prepare the site for private sector development.  This complex engineering project involved several infrastructure projects including significant earthworks, demolition of underground structures, drainage, construction of a 1.7km new rail line with signalized crossing, sewer pump station and rising main and containment of contamination on the site.  Over 500,000 tonnes of specially sourced and tested virgin excavated natural material, at 500mm thick, is being placed over the 58ha site as part of a site Voluntary Remediation Agreement.

APP administered the construction contracts, provided input during the tender phases, maintained on-site surveillance and performed the required audits to the satisfaction of the Site Auditor.

The complexity of the project is partly due to the many stakeholders of the site including an operating Newcastle Ports Corporation Berth, a rail line servicing OneSteel and an above-ground pipeline servicing Koppers.  There has been no unplanned interruption to any of the site stakeholders across the duration of the project.

A high level of collaboration, focus on clients and the community has contributed to this project’s ongoing success.
