APP’s smart strategy for Cancer Care Centre shaves two years off development schedule

Smart strategy by APP helped deliver Cairns Hospital's new Cancer Care Centre - one of the key elements of the $456M redevelopment - two years early.

The Queensland Government appointed APP in 2008 to provide Project Management and Programming services for this challenging redevelopment which will add 168 beds to the hospital by the end of 2015.  For a 3D view and fly-through of the new Clinical Services Building D, please click here.

The redeveloped hospital will also provide improved health services including additional cardiac and intensive care facilities, extended surgical capacity including day surgery, expanded birthing services, additional aged care, rehabilitation and mental health services.

The redevelopment is a programme of works comprising a series of separate projects to relocate existing hospital services and support functions to allow the construction of a new, 33,000 sq m Clinical Services Building on the existing campus, integrated with the refurbished existing 43,000 sq m hospital.

In order to accommodate the relocated health services, a 7,000 sq m Community Health Facility was built in three separate stages using local contractors. A 650-space car park was also built to replace the existing carpark to clear the site for new clinical facilities.

APP's strategy to integrate the Cancer Care Centre - including its linear accelerator bunkers - within the new carpark construction, rather than under the new clinical services building, allowed cancer care services to be brought online two years earlier than originally planned.

Opening of the new Cancer Care Centre in July 2011 has made a significant difference to the treatment and recovery of patients, and means hundreds of patients no longer need to travel to Townsville to receive their treatment each year.

The strategy also cut three months from the construction program, simplified the Clinical Services Building structure and saved both preliminary and escalation costs.
