APP Receives Commendation for its Successful Role in Staging the 2006 Commonwealth Games

APP played a key role on the success of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, leading to an outstanding commendation by Steve Bracks, MP, and Ron Walker, Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Corporation.

APP partnered with KBR to deliver the event “Overlay” for the Games – “Overlay” is the collective term for temporary facilities which can expand to meet the extraordinary needs of a major event. These include additional seating and accommodation, supplementary/ backup power infrastructure, telecommunications infrastructure, broadcast and timing/scoring facilities, as well as theming and decorative elements.

With the pride of Melbourne and Australia at stake, APP navigated complex and politically sensitive environments to deliver Overlay facilities at most of the 13 metropolitan and five regional venues that staged the event.

The successful implementation was the result of a year of planning and preparation performed by APP. Because the Games used existing facilities, one of the key successes was the collaborative approach taken by APP with existing venue operators, so that the venues could seamlessly transition from existing use, to Games use, and reinstate as previous.

The challenges were immense, particularly in the need for certain venues to be transformed overnight to cater to a different sport and audience the next day, such as the Multi-Purpose Arena, where the venue was reconfigured twice, from track cycling to basketball, and then to netball.

“Thank you for helping Victoria stage the biggest and best Commonwealth Games in history.

Your support enabled us to set a new standard for major events and to build on the golden legacy of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.

We are therefore delighted to present you with this memento of the Queen’s Baton Relay and the twelve amazing days in March that were our Commonwealth Games.”

Hon. Steve Bracks, MP Ronald J. Walker, AC CBE Premier of Victoria Chairman, Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Corporation
