Project details:

APP manages new 5-star Hotel development at The Star

The Darling is the latest award-winning addition to Sydney's CBD, a 5-star hotel built as part of the $870m transformation of The Star (formerly Star City Casino and Hotel). In addition to The Darling, the redevelopment included extensive and sophisticated new retail areas, a re-designed main gaming floor and 20 new restaurants, bars and cafés – with APP managing all of this.

A major focus of the project was the construction of The Darling, the first 5-star hotel built in the Sydney CBD since the 2000 Olympic Games. With 171 rooms The Darling brings the total rooms at The Star to over 650 across three accommodation towers, and adds 500 vehicle spaces to the property.

APP’s experience in hotels across the world ensured The Star – casino, hotel, apartments and Lyric Theatre – remained operational. The APP team staged the works to optimise revenue and keep costs low.

The Star objectives included the development of a new brand (The Darling) unique to the owner/operator.  This involved the coordination and integration of a number of international and Australian designers, architects and suppliers who all contributed to the creation of the new brand.

The Darling has devoted its top two floors to luxury two-bedroom Penthouses and Stellar Suites alongside stylish Adore Suites, Jewel Suites and premium rooms.

The Star complex includes a range of ‘green’ initiatives such as environmentally responsible materials, harvesting rainwater for hotel use, avoiding the use of ozone depleting substances and other energy conservation measures.

This prestigious hotel was recognised at the 2012 International Hotels Awards ceremony in London, where it won the Best International New Hotel Design and Construction prize.
