Gold Coast University Hospital
The recently completed Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) is the largest new hospital in the southern hemisphere, with over 750 beds and comprising a health facility, educational facility, multi-storey carparks, retail and commercial developments, plus a site for a future Private Hospital.
APP was appointed as Operational Commissioning Program Manager in 2011, with the task of developing and implementing a strategic commissioning plan to prepare the new hospital, its staff and all operating systems for receiving their first patients in late September 2013.
The culmination of this work saw 250 patients relocated from the existing Gold Coast Hospital into the new $1.8B facility (approx. 5km away) over an intense two (2) day transfer of patients.
The program management of such a major relocation required meticulous planning and attention to detail as well as the cooperation and support of numerous stakeholders.
In preparing the new facility, APP and staff from the GCUH Project Team managed the procurement and loading-in of 180,000 pieces of FF&E, trained 6,000 staff and validated the completeness of new operational systems via simulations and ‘mock trials’ to ensure the facility was safe and ready to support patient care.
Prior to physically moving the 250 patients, over 200 medical departments and their 15,000 pieces of FF&E were progressively moved over a three week period. The patient transfer followed, running to a five minute schedule, using a combination of ambulances, cars and mini-buses.
The GCUH project was the largest ‘off-site’ hospital relocation undertaken in Australia, and required an unprecedented amount of planning over three (3) years to ensure all tasks leading up to the relocation were completed to programme and could support ongoing clinical care from the moment the first patient arrived at this state of the art facility.
QLD Health is delighted with the seamless Commissioning process and speaks about the experience of working with APP.
