Project details:

APP is managing a major redevelopment for the RAN's Fleet Air Arm in Nowra

HMAS Albatross, 170Km south of Sydney, is the centre of the Royal Australian Navy's Fleet Air Arm.  The 900ha base supports two operational squadrons, a training squadron and, in the near future, all basic helicopter training for both Navy and Army. The facilities, infrastructure and engineering services that serve the Base required significant upgrade to meet the forecast operational and support capabilities for the next 30 years.  The project also needed to deliver operational efficiencies and address occupational health and safety upgrades at the same time.

APP is providing Project Management and Contract Administration services on the third stage of this redevelopment, which comprises 22 different building and infrastructure elements to improve the performance of the Base. This includes the upgrading of trunk engineering services necessary to support Naval operations, improve base security, upgrade buildings and facilities to support operational capability, provide an improved working environment, provide new facilities to enhance present and future planning of the site and upgrade aged facilities to contemporary standards.

Working in a live Defence environment with strict security protocols and state of the art aircraft, presents unique challenges. Further, a total of almost half a billion dollars of construction works is being delivered concurrently on Base across five different projects. APP was able to draw on our extensive experience in working on live sites such as airports, Casinos, hospitals and banking, to overcome these two key challenges.

Working on site with the multiple stakeholders across Defence, the local contractors, services consultants and the other project stakeholders, APP assisted to develop and implement a sequencing strategy to minimise the disruptions to Defence operations posed by multiple workfronts dispersed across the Base.

The various projects being managed throughout the Base are expected to be completed in June 2017.
