Tell us a bit about yourself - what is your background and what are you studying?
I am 24 years old and currently studying a Bachelor degree in Urban Development, majoring in Construction Management at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane. I am a proud Aboriginal Australian descending from the Jukun people of The Kimberley, in Western Australia.
Born and bred on the Gold Coast in Queensland, I graduated at Benowa State High School – which is where I found my enthusiasm to work in the building industry. So I jumped into a school-based apprenticeship in my senior years, continuing immediately after school and obtaining my Cert. III in Carpentry and working on various commercial and residential projects.
Since then I have worked as a supervisor – managing a team and teaching new employees, whilst liaising with the owner and customers/clients to ensure jobs were completed and to the appropriate standard.
Following this, I obtained my Seniors First Aid/CPR certification and worked as a lifeguard for a period.
I’ve also travelled throughout Asia and then to the United Kingdom, where I was fortunate enough to gain employment for an overseas company that owns a chain of hostels throughout UK and Europe. I was part of a small construction team sent to various sites abroad in order to plan and construct various projects, ensuring the projects were finished to design, on time and within budget.
How did you come to join APP?
After being overseas for a year, I returned home at the end of 2011 with a goal to further widen my skills in the construction industry. This led to my enrolment in Construction Management at QUT and securing an internship with APP.
Living, working, and travelling abroad was an amazing experience that exposed me to working with different nationalities and cultures within the industry. It's increased my passion to grow and evolve into the future with the APP team.
