The largest event ever staged in Papua New Guinea
The Pacific Games is a major sporting event held every four years. It welcomes 4,000 athletes and officials from 24 countries across the Pacific region. The 2015 event was staged in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
A significant capital works program was required before the Games, to accommodate the 28 sporting competitions, opening and closing ceremonies and cultural programme. This included the construction of a new games village, aquatic complex and stadia valued at more than $600 million.
Strategic advice and project delivery
The local Games Organising Committee (GOC) appointed APP in 2014, to help prepare the venue for the event and offer expert strategic advice on matters including:
- Venue commissioning
- Workplace health and safety planning.
In the weeks leading up to the Games, APP's team of 11 Project Managers were constantly present at the venues, providing:
- On-the-ground site management assistance
- Supervision and works coordination for contractors and volunteers
- Spectator services
- Event operations assistance.
The largest major event ever staged in Papua New Guinea, the Pacific Games were an unqualified success – both in terms of effective project delivery and in building capacity for future events to be held in the country.
