Cutting-edge design with a local flavour
The GPT Group, co-owner of the Highpoint shopping centre, had identified significant growth potential for the centre. To capitalise on this, they decided to undertake a major expansion project.
A key objective of the project was to attract landmark tenants that had never before been represented in any shopping centre in the west of Melbourne’s CBD, including David Jones, Apple, Zara and Top Shop.
GPT wanted to create a cutting-edge design, with a very high degree of environmental sustainability, which also reflected the local character of the people and environment.
Comprehensive guidance and support
APP was appointed by GPT to provide strategic planning and project management services, as well as expert guidance and support throughout the entire development, particularly in the fields of:
- Master planning
- Development approvals
- Design management
- Contractor tender and award
- Construction phase project management
- Tenancy coordination.
The extensive remodelling and expansion added 30,000m2 retail space to the existing shopping centre. It also delivered 1,000 new car park spaces over two new multi-deck car parks, and an external ring road realignment.
Anchor tenants of the new expansion include Woolworths and David Jones, plus 110 speciality retail stores including Apple, Zara and Top Shop. The redevelopment was delivered successfully, with all tenancies opening on time.
This development was recognised for design excellence in the award for Best Retail Architecture in Australia in 2014 at the Asia Pacific International Property Awards.
