APP delivers beyond expectations for Queensland University of Technology

In 2009, APP was engaged by Queensland University of Technology to deliver new Wet Laboratories and Workshops, for handling chemicals and drugs in liquid solutions or volatile phases.

APP’s challenge was to deliver flexible, multipurpose teaching spaces with co-located storage space, to help overcome the lack of overall space for expansion. APP achieved this without compromising teaching, learning research and administrative activities within each of the faculties

The project was spread over five separate blocks within the Gardens Point campus, with the majority of laboratory space intended to be in ‘E’ Block. However, once engaged, APP identified that a heritage listing precluded the construction of laboratories in ‘E’ Block, a challenge which could have stopped the project from proceeding.

APP investigated alternative locations and developed a strategy to move departments into new locations, in order to free up the necessary contiguous space to construct the laboratories. Heritage listed areas were treated sympathetically and enhanced by the fit-out solutions adopted.

The University achieved a better outcome than had originally been expected; the area created allowed an expansion of the Wet Laboratories’ activities.
