Project details:

APP manages $860m Star City refurbishment and 5-Star Hotel development

Star City transformed the Sydney skyline in 1997, with APP as project manager.  In 2008, APP was appointed to manage the venue’s significant expansion into a world-class entertainment destination complete with a new 5 star hotel, more restaurants and bars, and improved entertainment and gaming facilities.

The expansion saw the casino and restaurants reoriented to the harbour and city skyline, and a grand new casino entry added. The development includes a 5,500m2 luxury retail precinct featuring labels such as Salvatore Ferragamo, Bottega Veneta, Chanel Fragrance, Gucci and more.  The number of restaurants and bars has also increased, with fine dining added via David Chang’s ‘Momofuku Seiobo’, Stefano Manfredi’s ‘Balla’ and a new patisserie from Adriano Zumbo.

A major focus was a new 171-room hotel - the Darling - the first 5-star hotel built in the Sydney CBD since the Olympic Games.  The Star now boasts over 650 hotel rooms across three towers and incorporates several ‘green’ initiatives.

Additionally, a new 3,000 seat multi-use entertainment facility is under construction and on schedule to open in December 2012.

The entire project involved complex staging around a live environment combined with different contracting models to accommodate a range of both international and local design teams.

It is a testament to the project team that Echo (previously Tabcorp) grew revenue and earnings at the existing casino throughout the two year renovation, as reported in the Australian Financial Review on 29 August 2011.

“Sydney-based Echo grew revenue and earnings at “The Star” throughout a two year renovation during which the property’s orientation was flipped to face the harbour and much of the main gaming floor was shut for months.”

The Australian Financial Review, 29 August 2011

"The substantial capex (capital expenditure) at The Star, in conjunction with the extended exclusivity of the Sydney casino licence, have been executed on time and budget, a worthy outcome in the current environment of cost escalation"

Brett Paton, Director, Echo Entertainment
