Flying High: APP Redevelops Sydney Airport While Maintaining Full Operational Status

It was one of the most demanding situations imaginable …how to redevelop Sydney Airport’s flagship International Terminal without interruption to planes, passengers, visitors and vital retail trade.

“It was complex,” said David Rann, the APP Project Director. “How to redevelop the international terminal departures level without affecting anyone’s operations.”

Sydney Airports Corporation wanted to upgrade the look, efficiency and profitability of their flagship T1 International Terminal Building, and sought APP’s involvement to manage the design and construction phases of the airport development. But the airport was to remain fully operational at all times - not just the travel-related facilities, but also the retail facilities, which provided a vital cashflow to the Corporation.

APP responded by initially modelling the development to formulate a staging process that would allow continual operation. The retail component was important; the retail outlets had on-going tenancy rights, which meant SACL had an obligation to avoid any interruption to their ability to trade.

APP adopted a site development process which limited work to specific, moving areas, and this resulted in no perceived impact on traveller comfort, airport security, and retail trade.

“The client was impressed,” David Rann said. “We achieved all their goals, and now Sydney Airport has a stylish, highly profitable new Terminal to greet overseas travellers.”
