Construction worker inside Sydney Metro tunnel

Sydney Metro Northwest

Connecting the Northwest with Sydney’s first rapid driverless trains.

As Australia’s biggest public transport project, the Sydney Metro will significantly change how people move around Sydney. The first operational line for Sydney Metro is the Northwest line, a 36km metro line from Tallawong to Chatswood that opened in May 2019.

The new “turn-up-and-go” metro services are fast, reliable and Australia’s only fully accessible and driverless train service. Twelve train services run every hour during peak periods with half that number during off-peak hours and over the weekend. While Sydney’s suburban train network carries up to 24,000 people per hour on a line, Sydney Metro has a target capacity of 40,000 people per hour.

The APP Group acted as Independent Certifier for the Tunnels and Stations contract of the Sydney Metro Northwest project. The project team reviewed and verified that all tunnels, surface works and associated infrastructure met the contracted design and construct specifications. We also delivered independent environmental auditing services for the Surface and Viaduct Civil Works of the project within the scope of the Independent Certifier role.

In addition, we provided Transaction Strategy & Advice for the Sydney Metro Northwest project, acting as the Transaction Director for major procurement processes. The team delivered communications management and transaction documentation, as well as process, risk and data management. The APP Group met all announced target dates and was able to come in significantly under the budget.

Construction of the Northwest line included twin 15km tunnels, a 4km skytrain, eight new railway stations and 4,000 commuter car parking spaces.

Our project team were awarded the Government Partnership Excellence Award at the 2015 Infrastructure Partnerships Australia and the Projects Grand Prix and Best Transit Project awards at the 2015 Partnership Awards in London.
