Australian Embassy Jakarta

The new Australian Embassy in Jakarta, which opened in 2016, is Australia’s largest embassy complex anywhere in the world. Located on a 40,000sqm site, the embassy includes an official residence for the Head of Mission together with accommodation and recreational facilities for Australian-based officers and their families.   

As the largest embassy complex in the world, it was critical the project go as smoothly as possible, considering cultural diversity and construction challenges that could impact the project. The APP Group was selected to deliver this and more as Project Director. Our team guided the wider local and international project team through to the successful completion of the construction phase. 

The embassy sets a leading example of design that is sensitive to the Indonesian environment and harnesses low resource technologies to minimise its impact. Lightly insulated facades together with sophisticated ventilation systems reduce energy use. Site stormwater is managed through extensive landscaping, green roof technology and an underground water retention system, while water conservation is achieved through rainwater harvesting, sewerage recycling and low-flow sanitary fixtures. 

The chancery buildings were each separately clad in zinc, aluminium, bronze, copper and steel and express Australia’s national identity. The embassy design is in accordance with the Building Code of Australia and Indonesian Standards were employed where they were deemed to be of a higher or more relevant standard.  Particular attention was been given to disability access and construction is in accordance with best practice methods, technologies and skills to realise the highest standards in building quality.
