Shining a light on Australians’ history, creativity and culture through portraiture.
Located within Canberra’s Parliamentary Triangle, the National Portrait Gallery required its own dedicated building due to its growing profile and collection. The 8,500m2 low-rise gallery now houses 500 portraits, including the 130 previously displayed at the Old Parliament House and is located adjacent to the High Court of Australia, overlooking Lake Burley Griffin.
Created by architectural firm, Johnston Pilton Walker, the building contained high quality finishes, and cutting-edge environmental features and the design draws in Canberra’s unique natural light.
The Commonwealth Department of Finance and Deregulation appointed The APP Group as Project Director to manage the planning and delivery of the building, liaising with stakeholders including the National Capital Authority and the ACT Planning Authorities, risk management, and ESD initiatives.
