Tram passing by

Next Generation Trams

Sourcing modern, safe and efficient trams to replace Melbourne’s ageing high-floor trams.

The Next Generation Trams project will be Australia’s largest ever investment in locally made trams and will deliver a more comfortable, more accessible and energy-efficient journey for passengers. The new G-class trams provide improved capacity than previous high-floor trams. Onboard energy storage will limit current draw at peak times and reduce power usage by 30-40% per passenger compared to E-class trams.

The APP Group delivered Strategic Advisory services including transaction advisory and management services for Main Rolling Stock tram supply and maintenance. Our team provided strategic advice on market expectations, industry best practice, transaction processes and timing, effective negotiations and conducted a review of key documentation.

The new G-class trams are the seventh generation of trams for the Melbourne Tram Network. The trams will be serviced by a new tram maintenance and stabling facility to be built at Maidstone on part of the old Victoria University site. The project will also extend the local tram line on Hampstead and Williamson roads so that trams can access the new 24/7 facility on Hampstead Road. From 2025, the new Next Generation Trams will start rolling out locally on routes 57, 59 and 82.
