Improving Access to National Parks

Improving visitor access and infrastructure for National Parks and Wildlife Service.

In 2019, the NSW Government announced $150m as a significant investment in visitor infrastructure to improve access to National Parks across NSW. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) needed advice on how to deliver this program of works without disrupting its other usual activities, including fire management, conservation, and servicing visitors.

Based on a decade of experience partnering with the Western Sydney Parklands Trust, The APP Group was engaged to develop a strategy for phasing the investment across a complex array of assets, objectives and funding allocations between eight regional branches. Our experienced team established project delivery protocols, plans and documentation to deliver the program of works successfully for each region across four years.

While each region faces unique challenges across its range of natural environments, The APP Group outlined a core management plan state-wide to streamline delivery. The approach was then carefully designed to also consider the needs of each region and address these in the development of project delivery plans.

During this time, NSW faced its worst fire season on record, severe flooding on the South Coast and changing visitor patterns due to the Covid pandemic. Our team adapted their earlier approach to work exclusively with a smaller core group at NPWS to avoid adding unnecessary burdens during this volatile period.
