Connecting Tasmania and Victoria for Australia’s clean energy future.
Marinus Link is a planned undersea and underground electricity and data interconnector between Tasmania and Victoria.
The APP Group has been engaged to support the development of the commercial strategy and to provide commercial and procurement advice for Stage 1 (750 MW) of the 1500 MW interconnector. The role covers supporting the engagement process with government shareholders and providing detailed transaction and procurement advisory focused on the commercial and economic drivers.
Marinus Link will enable Tasmania to import excess supply of low-cost solar and wind produced in Victoria, while reserving its hydro and storing the extra energy. Clean hydropower can then feed the mainland grid when needed most, improving energy reliability, efficiency, and affordability for electricity customers.
The project will also help cut at least 140 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent by 2050. This is the equivalent of removing more than a million combustion-engine cars from our roads.
Marinus Link is a cornerstone project of the Australian Government’s Rewiring the Nation Plan and is classified as urgent in the Australian Energy Market Operator’s national energy plan.
In August 2024, The APP Group’s commercial advisory team successfully led the transaction of a cable system which will supply power between Victoria and Tasmania.
Under the agreement with Marinus Link Pty Ltd, Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian will design, test, supply and install a 750 MW high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system which will stretch 345 km long across the Bass Strait and underground in Gippsland.
