Tapping into environmental smarts to support a major energy transmission upgrade.
In the Moreton Bay region in Southern Queensland, a second powerline was needed to meet the growing demand for electricity in the area. A new 100kV Sub-Transmission Line would act as a second connection between the South Pine bulk supply substation and the Hays Inlet substation at Rothwell along the existing corridor. The corridor contains several environmentally sensitive areas, including marine plant areas, riparian zones, wetland, remnant woodland with koala and bird habitat, and acid sulphate soil areas.
To deliver the project, Transfield turned to The APP Group for our specialist experience in major infrastructure projects and environmental management. Transfield needed to create the second powerline with as little environmental impact as possible, and to rehabilitate any areas that might be disturbed. Our team developed site environmental plans and established controls at each construction site, which were audited to ensure the construction remained compliant.
During construction, several modified construction methodologies were adopted to reduce disturbance, and marine plants were carefully relocated to a ‘foster site’ and later reinstated after completion of the tower. Key habitat trees were earmarked and protected along routes and areas used by the local koala and bird populations. Where this was not possible, refuge poles were installed as a replacement.
