Sydney Gateway

Improving connectivity and liveability around Sydney Airport.

Sydney Gateway is part of the NSW Government’s vision to improve traffic flow and reduce travel times around Sydney Airport. The APP Group and SMEC partnered together and were appointed as the Independent Verifier in 2020 for this major connectivity project by Transport for NSW and John Holland Seymour Whyte JV.

Once complete, the project will connect the WestConnex motorways at St Peters with Sydney Airport’s international and domestic terminals. Several new access roads, bridges, overpasses and link roads will allow for better freight distribution and help to reduce traffic in Mascot. The new toll-free connection will bypass 26 sets of traffic lights and is estimated to reduce travel time from Parramatta by 40 minutes.

The APP Group in partnership with SMEC have been appointed as Independent Verifiers for the Sydney Gateway project. The role covers the review of design and project documentation, identification of key risks, and the review and certification of construction works in accordance with the relevant regulatory and contracting requirements.

The Twin Arch Bridges is the largest bridge structure on the Sydney Gateway project with each arch weighing approximately 660 tonnes, spanning 105 metres each and made of 100% Australian steel. A steel box girder will also be transported over the existing Nigel Love Bridge and then at either side of the Alexandra Canal. The elevated access viaduct and overpass over Qantas Drive intersection will also create seamless transport connectivity from WestConnex to the Domestic Terminal, minimising congestion and wait times.
