Wiigulga Sports Complex

Award winning multipurpose facility filled with designs reflecting local Indigenous heritage.

The Wiigulga Sports Complex has transformed an existing, undeveloped site in the north-western end of Woolgoolga into a hub that offers the community a breadth of sporting and community facilities. The building’s extraordinary design reflects the local Indigenous heritage and of multiculturalism found in the Northern Beaches of Coffs Harbour.

First Nations voices are integrated in the planning stages, and the art and culture in the finished building are visible throughout. The exterior of the building is clad with large LED screens that feature designs created by local artists in a glowing purple hue. Populous, the Principal Design Consultant and Architect, recently received a Commendation for Public Architecture from the Australian Institute of Architects 2024 NSW Country Division Architecture Awards.

The APP Group was engaged by the City of Coffs Harbour to manage the design and delivery alongside Populous. Wiigulga Sports Complex was delivered within a 24-month program which included design, contractor procurement, construction and handover.

Wiigulga Sports Complex facilities include:

  • Adaptable playing fields to cater for community cricket, AFL, rugby, soccer and touch football
  • Field lighting to allow for day and night operations
  • New roadways, car parking, drainage and civil infrastructure to support site operations, and
  • A new Indoor Sports Northern Beaches Multi-Purpose Centre Building including a café, function rooms for up to 1000 guests, change facilities, two indoor sports courts and a stage for community use
