Providing specialised environmental remediation advice for one of Sydney’s largest urban regeneration precincts.
Millers Point Gasworks was the first gas light network outside of Europe, operating from 1841 to 1921 before it was demolished to pave the path for Hickson Road. In 2009, the NSW Environmental Project Agency declared the gasworks to be remediated to create the Barangaroo precinct including a financial hub, commercial and residential high-rise towers, The Crown integrated resort and more than 10ha of open recreation space and parkland.
An in-situ chemical oxidation trial targeting the structures beneath Hickson Road and the excavation of more than 150,000 tonnes of gasworks contamination needed to be carried out to remediate the site. Barangaroo Delivery Authority appointed The APP Group to provide strategic advisory and project management services for the remediation project. The team assessed the remediation options based on technical outcomes, recommended preferred remediation methodology and advised the Barangaroo Development Authority on contracting mechanisms.
In addition, The APP Group provided strategic advice in managing contamination, Work Health and Safety issues associated with asbestos, and management of the Environmental Protection Licence across the site. In early 2016, we were appointed as Barangaroo Development Authority’s Environmental Site Representatives during site inspections and audits of the 1 Sydney Harbour and Crown Casino developments.
Through risk mitigation, environmental auditing and project management, The APP Group delivered $20m in savings across the lifecycle of the project.
