Beach Volleyball Bondi

Beach Volleyball Stadium, Bondi Beach

Sydney Olympic Games 2000

The Beach Volleyball Stadium was a temporary venue located developed specifically for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and was immediately dismantled after the competition. Prominently featured on Bondi Beach, the beach volleyball venue was one of the most exciting and controversial Olympic Overlay projects in Sydney at the time. The venue included a 10,000 seat stadium, a 400 seat grandstand, training and warm-up courts on Bondi Beach, back of house services and facilities in Bondi Park.

The APP Group managed the construction which began with community benefit works in March 2000, and the venue itself in May. The project was delivered in half the original planned time to honour commitments made by the Olympic Co-ordination Authority to Waverley Council, and on time for the Sydney 2000 operations team to bump-in during August.

The project attracted a high level of media and public attention about its presence on Bondi Beach, which our team helped to proactively manage with stakeholders at the time. Ultimately, the venue won international acclaim for its success and quality as a world-class and environmentally sensitive temporary facility.

While the project was temporary, it did include $1m worth of upgrades to Bondi Pavilion, including improved accessibility, a lift and painting, leaving a positive legacy behind for the Bondi community.

I wish to commend (The APP Group) for their work in containing the effects of rough seas at the beach volleyball venue at Bondi ... Their services were beyond the call of duty ... (their) contribution in co-ordinating the project management team during the period is particularly laudable. Please thank them for efforts under trying circumstances.

John Barraclough, Executive Director - Olympic Co-Ordination Authority
