Canberra's largest and most significant transportation infrastructure project.
The ACT Government was keen to stimulate the increase in visitor numbers into Canberra’s CBD while encouraging a move away from car-based trips to avoid increased congestion. Recognising that light rail on a dedicated track is one of the most reliable forms of public transport, Capital Metro Agency was conscious that the service needed to be convenient, reliable, and integrated with a modified bus and pedestrian network.
With all major infrastructure projects throughout Australia, the ACT Government and principal project partners required an independent entity to certify that the works were being designed and constructed in accordance with the requirements of the Territory Project Documents. The APP Group was appointed as an Independent Certifier to review design, construction, testing, commissioning and operational readiness throughout the duration of Capital Metro Project Stage 1.
After completion in 2018, the Capital Metro route includes approximately 12km of track from the city, travelling north to Gungahlin and is serviced by 13 stations with trams running at 6-minute intervals during peak times. The light rail is a bold new landmark contributing to Canberra’s status as a confident and vibrant city.
