Macquarie University Private Hospital

Delivering an elite medical facility that offers a new era in Australian healthcare.

The Macquarie University Private Hospital (MUPH) Project consisted of delivering an elite medical facility incorporating a 13 bed health facility, capable of expanding to 208 beds, and a 10,000m^2 clinic building accommodating the Australian School of Advanced Medicine (ASAM) and medical consulting suites.

The hospital building includes 16 operating theatres with state-of-the-art equipment and a number of areas housing specialist departments including Radiology, Radiotherapy, and Intensive Care Unit and Oncology, while the adjacent specialist clinic building is linked to the hospital building via a two-level bridge. ASAM is the first medical school in Australia to be linked to a private teaching hospital on a university campus, with facilities including a specialist surgical skills anatomy laboratory centre and simulation centre with sophisticated audio-visual equipment.

The APP Group was appointed by Macquarie University Private Hospital Joint Venture Special Purpose Company as Project Manager responsible for delivering the MUPH. Our role was to coordinate the consultation process to define services plan, model of care, operational components, functional brief and business case. Our team also managed the design process, and construction and commissioning phases of the project.

Whilst health projects by nature are highly technical and complex, the Macquarie University Private Hospital brought additional challenges when part-way through construction the JV was dissolved, and the University took control as Hospital Operator. The APP Group's response to this transition phase was to engage in continuous consultation with the numerous stakeholders including the University and Hospital executives, University operations and the multiple specialist clinicians onsite to ensure that the project objectives were clearly defined, competing objectives balanced and the ongoing operations of the surrounding University campus maintained.

The success of our team's approach was realised through the strength of the relationships with the Hospital and University stakeholders, which enabled the project to deal with significant changes and deliver an outstanding hospital complex.
