Lord Howe Island

Lord Howe Island Critical Infrastructure Program

Maintaining a World Heritage-listed Island off Australia’s east coast sustainable for future generations.

A Critical Infrastructure Program has been established by NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service and the Lord Howe Island Board to service the island with up-to-date marine infrastructure, support the Island’s natural ecosystems and environment with appropriate biosecurity systems and sustainably managing and disposing of waste generated on the Island. This program will provide the Lord Howe Island Board with resources for improvements and upgrades for essential infrastructure projects that ensure the sustainability and successful future of the Island.

The APP Group along with major partner SMEC has been selected to provide commercial management and project management services for this project. Our team will be preparing a masterplan building on key strategies, such as the Marine Strategy and Waste Management Strategy, and plans to further enable infrastructure. We have also been appointed to:

  • Procure a suitable marine freight service to Lord Howe Island which will be replacing the existing freight transport vessel
  • Design and delivery of biosecurity measures to support the long-term security of the Marine Strategy, including related capital works on Lord Howe Island and to the primary port that services the island
  • Delivery of a fully functioning Waste Management Facility on Lord Howe Island to support daily operations and the Island’s tourism-led economy

The Lord Howe Island Group was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Property in 1982 in recognition of the Island’s natural phenomena and rich terrestrial and marine biodiversity. The island was also added to the Australian National Heritage List in 2007 and the NSW State Heritage Register in 1999.
