Delivering a state-of-the-art court precinct in the Hunter region.
The original Newcastle Courthouse was housed in four buildings over two sites. Constructed in 1983, the buildings no longer met the functional needs of the courts and were becoming too difficult and costly to maintain. Due to its size and heritage status, the NSW Department of Communities and Justice decided to construct a new courthouse on a brownfield site in the Newcastle CBD.
The project included the construction of an eight-storey 3,000msq building for district and supreme court use. The building was to house 10 courtrooms, 12 holding cells, seven courtroom holding cells, interview rooms, video conferencing and telecommunications technology, and office accommodation for various agency groups and the judiciary.
The APP Group was appointed to project manage the delivery of the new courthouse precinct. The role included managing the design and procurement phases, the enabling works required to prepare the site for construction, including the rectification of an old mine, the main works construction, and the relocation of staff from the existing courthouse to the new complex.
