Improving travel connections and alleviating congestion in the heart of Sydney.
The NSW Government needed a solution to reduce bus congestion within Sydney’s CBD and developed plans to extend Sydney’s light rail. Each light rail service can carry around 450 passengers, the same as up to nine standard buses. A combined bus and light rail network would significantly improve public transport to health precincts in Randwick, the University of NSW, TAFE and major sporting and entertainment facilities. Additional light rail services could also be added for extra capacity to support major events.
Sydney Light Rail began in 1997 with the Inner West Light Rail (L1) from Central Station through to Wentworth Park. L1 was further extended to Lilyfield in 2000 and to Dulwich Hill in 2014. The new CBD and South East Light Rail project added two new lines that both begin at Circular Quay and move along George St to Central Station where they connect with L1. The new lines then continue through Surry Hills and Moore Park before splitting off to Randwick (L2) or Kingsford (L3).
The APP Group, in partnership with Arcadis, was appointed by Transport for NSW to provide Independent Certification services for the CBD and South East Light Rail project. The project team reviewed and verified the design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the Light Rail and association infrastructure in accordance with contract requirements.
The project team also delivered Strategic Advisory and Transaction Strategy & Advice services for the extension project which began in 2014. Construction of the CBD and South East Light Rail was completed in 2021.
