University of Newcastle – Honeysuckle

Delivering a world-leading sustainable design and education facility in Newcastle.

After the launch of NUspace, the University of Newcastle’s flagship building of its City Campus in 2017, the next phase of its inner-city growth was announced with the design and construction of the Q Building. Located at Honeysuckle, just 300m from NUspace, the new Q Building is another part of the University’s long-term plan to drive innovation and economic growth in regional NSW. The Q Building houses the University’s Creative Industries and Innovation hub providing a vital link between industry, business, and researchers.

The APP Group was re-appointed by the University as Project Manager for the Q Building. Our team collaborated with several local and national consultants and contractors to manage the extensive works which involved archaeology, demolition, remediation, mine grouting, civil works and utility services.

The APP Group were heavily involved throughout the design process, to ensure sustainability and innovation objectives were met. This resulted in EJE Architecture designing to achieve a 6-Star Green-Star rating that incorporated electrochromic glazing and a mass timber structure. The Sage glass glazing changes tint in response to sunlight improving building thermals while maintaining transparency and is the largest installation of its type in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Q Building was certified with a 6-star Green Star Design & As Built rating by the Green Building Council of Australia in February 2022 and was officially opened on 7 October 2022.

The APP Group has a long history of working with the University of Newcastle delivering NUspace as well as several projects for research entities including the National Institute of Energy and Resources and Hunter Medical Research Institute.
