Managing the world’s most prestigious annual motor racing competition in Australia.
The Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix is the Australian round of the international Formula 1® World Championship.
The project involves the transformation of the 5.3ha Albert Park from public parkland to an international motor racing circuit for associated motor racing activity, media, corporate and general admission hospitality, entertainment and the necessary temporary traffic and transportation requirements. It is one of the world’s most complex temporary infrastructure projects delivered on an annual basis in a fully operational public parkland on the edge of the Melbourne CBD.
From 2010 to 2020, The APP Group was engaged as the Engineering Project Manager responsible for the delivery and management of the event overlay for the project. The project budget is approximately $26M each year which is dependent on the scope of work defined during the circuit planning and event facility planning phase of the project.
The Grand Prix Project is identified as the establishment, operation in conjunction with the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) during the event, and removal of a temporary motor racing circuit and event facilities and infrastructure. This also includes all supporting facilities, services and activities required to adequately service all event patrons and participants.
The event is held within the Albert Park precinct, a public park that is utilised by a significant number of sporting and leisure clubs and associations, as well as numerous members of the surrounding community. The scope of the project also includes the timely restoration of the site and handback of roads, playing fields and general park areas, in accordance with the timelines agreed with the Parks’ manager, Parks Victoria.
The APP Group’s role as Engineering Project Manager broadly consisted of:
- The overall planning, development and documentation of circuit and event facility plans applicable for each year’s event.
- The progressive scoping, procurement and contract administration of all contracts associated with the event overlay, on a recurrent basis.
- The overall management and supervision of all contractors engaged by AGPC of the delivery of event facilities and infrastructure associated with the event.
- In conjunction with AGPC, consult with and manage expectations of all relevant stakeholder groups.
The Australian Grand Prix is one of Australia’s largest temporary infrastructure projects delivered on an annual basis in a fully operational public parkland. The project scope covers:
- 10 grandstands
- 27km of mesh fencing
- Thousands of concrete safety barriers
- Temporary catering, toilets and overpasses to cater to more than 200,000 attendees
It will be, from an APP point of view, to look at how we can refine and continuously improve, how we can raise the bar and make sure next year’s event is better than this year’s event.
