Shaping Sydney’s first surf park facility 13km from the coast.
Manly, Bondi, Maroubra, Cronulla — there is little doubt that Sydney is home to some of Australia's best surf beaches. But for the millions of residents in Sydney’s outer and western suburbs, getting to the beach is far from easy or convenient. Following on from the success of its Melbourne location, URBNSURF invested $75 million to build an inland surf park at Sydney Olympic Park, providing an authentic alternative to ocean-based surfing 13km from the CBD.
The APP Group was appointed as Project Director and Superintendent for the URBNSURF Sydney project. The project team provided project management and superintendent services to deliver the 3.6ha precinct.
At the heart of the project is the north-south oriented lagoon featuring Wavegarden wave generating technology, capable of producing surfable waves every eight seconds. The facility also includes sustainable design elements, renewable energy and water saving systems.
The project also includes the construction of amenities in including a licensed café, surf rental shop, surf academy, event and function spaces, open spaces, paths and cycleways.
We’re excited to open up more opportunities for the community to engage with surf culture. The main challenge for us was how to create a space that appeals to professional surfers and beginners that feels like their local beach …
There is broad interest in what we’re looking to achieve and having the right partner with the right experience on board is especially important. We’re pleased to partner with APP for URBNSURF Sydney and see our vision coming to life.
