Sydney Olympic Games 2000
When the NSW Government decided to relocate the Royal Agricultural Society to a 32ha site at Homebush it needed a Project Manager who could deliver on time, cost and quality.
In December 1995, The APP Group was given just 26 months to hand over Sydney’s first major Olympic venue and new home for the 1998 Royal Easter Show. We were responsible for all aspects of the $388 million project including design, construction and budget. Through The APP Group’s innovative and consultative approach of appointing a managing contractor to coordinate all construction on-site, practical completion was achieved ahead of schedule and within budget.
Over 15 individual construction companies were engaged to build 26 separate facilities within the complex. The type of buildings ranged from the boutique Clydesdale building constructed from recycled timber, to the Cattle Pavilions with their Ecological Sustainable Development features, to the state-of-the-art 20,000 seat Showring, to the unique timber and steel composite structure of the Dome.
The outstanding success of Sydney’s new Showground can be directly attributed to APP’s initiation of strategies designed specifically for the project such as:
- Managing the design of 200,000m2 built environment within 9 months
- An Industrial Relations strategy which delivered industrial harmony
- Site Security to optimise the flow of traffic, people and materials
- Bus Transportation for workers from remote carparks in order to reduce site traffic congestion
- Site inductions of over 8,000 workers which addressed issues such as OHS & R, environmental, quality and project details
- Early procurement of long lead time materials.
The APP Group's performance on the Sydney Showground project as one of the largest projects Australia has seen, is testament enough to the excellent service The APP Group provides.
The site team were always knowledgeable with current issues and available with their time. It was a great feeling of something big happening and this attitude was paramount to the quality finish and tight timeframe being maintained. The APP Group went out of their way to ensure this attitude extended beyond the site office and on to the site. Thank you team for a job well done.
