Modernising and revolutionising mail logistics for one of Australia's largest mail companies.
The Sydney West Letter Facility was constructed as part of Australia Post’s National Network Renewal Program to modernise and revolutionise the handling, sorting and delivery of mail for the 21st Century. The APP Group’s role was Project Manager, overseeing the design and construction of the $100m facility which covered base building and process equipment installation.
The project comprised a 30,000m2 process floor, three undercover dock areas totalling 10,000m2 with vehicle manoeuvring areas, two administration wings and undercroft carparking for 830 cars. The total development area was 65,000m2 on a 6.3ha site.
The process hall was airconditioned using a displacement/diffuser system which only conditions a zone 3m above floor level without wasting energy conditioning the unoccupied 3.5m zones above. Extensive power, data and communication systems were designed and installed. As power is critical to the functioning of the centre, provisions were made for dual power delivery from separate grids and 100% generation from standby generators.
The new generation of mail sorting equipment also required extensive data and fibre optic systems and approximately 270-300kms of cable were rolled out for the entire project.
Throughout the course of the project, APP has been able to inject specific skill requisites for various aspects of the project on which the successful outcome has been built. The team demonstrated a high level of professionalism, technical capacity and pragmatism which ensured that the project ran smoothly from the client's needs and contractor's perspective.
