Outlining viable opportunities to manage energy demands during peak periods in Sydney.
To better manage the future energy needs of inner Sydney, the NSW Department of Planning established a Demand Management and Planning Project to identify ways to reduce the demand for electricity at peak periods in the city. The project was a joint initiative between the NSW Department of Energy, Utilities and Sustainability, TransGrid and EnergyAustralia.
The APP Group was appointed as project manager to oversee the complexities of the project. This included more than 900 energy efficiency and peak demand investigations at facilities in the Sydney metropolitan area over two years. Investigations took place at a range of facilities from hospitals, industrial premises, high-rise residential, hospitality and educational facilities and commercial buildings. Further residential demand management programs were coordinated with Randwick City and Manly Councils to test the effectiveness of demand management techniques.
The role also included the development of a project plan for the investigation period, technical report reviews, advising of viable demand management options and strategic advice on the findings of the audits. Through all of this, The APP Group delivered the project and proved it was possible to reduce peak network demand through viable demand management technologies and techniques.
