Geoscience Australia Building

Delivering comprehensive scientific laboratories to support geoscience in Australia.

The Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO) building is a purpose-built 40,000sqm geoscientific research facility. It contains nearly 30 specialist laboratories including geo-chronology, chromatography, palaeontology, microbiology, isotope and mass spectrometry laboratories. The facility can house more than 500 scientific, technical and support staff.

The APP Group delivered a full range of project management services for the project. These included design management, risk mitigation, project scoping, team appointments, contracting and construction superintendence. Our team also managed approvals with the Parliamentary Works Committee and other approval processes.

The building was completed in December 1997, almost five months ahead of schedule and within the approved budget. In 1998, the project won the ACT Master Builders Project of the Year Award.

AGSO merged with the Australian Surveying and Land Information Group in 2001 to form Geoscience Australia. Geoscience Australia now has a remit well beyond its historic focus on resource development to topics as diverse as natural hazards such as tsunamis and earthquakes, environmental issues and climate change, groundwater research, marine and coastal research, carbon capture and storage and vegetation monitoring as well as Earth observations from space.
