Delivering an upgraded donor facility with modern technologies and mobile joinery units in Townsville.
Lifeblood, funded by the Australian government, plays a vital role in providing life-giving blood, plasma, transplantation services, and other biological products. Serving over 25 million people across 7 million square kilometres, Lifeblood unites humanity to build a healthier nation. Beyond blood donations, Lifeblood excels in clinical care, education, and ongoing research and development. As part of an extended master services agreement, The APP Group (APP) served as the Project Manager for mechanical upgrades across multiple Lifeblood Donor Centres in Australia.
The Red Cross Lifeblood Donor Facility relocation project involves moving the existing facility from the Townsville Hospital site to a newly constructed facility in the Townsville’s Domain Central retail precinct in Garbutt, Queensland. This strategic transition and relocation was required due to a comprehensive facility upgrade program slated to commence at Townsville University Hospital in late 2023.
The APP Group played a crucial role throughout the project lifecycle. Our involvement spanned various phases, including due diligence, meticulous design, seamless delivery, and the critical handover process. APP’s expertise ensured a smooth transition and successful implementation of this essential healthcare infrastructure.
To create a welcoming environment, the team explored new materials that went beyond the standard fare typically found in donor centres. Additionally, the team found innovative ways to use existing materials which allowed for a unique blend of functionality and aesthetics.
The facility boasts mobile joinery units for donation equipment and consumables. These flexible units enhance efficiency by allowing staff to adapt the space as needed. The Red Cross Lifeblood Donor Facility implemented the first-ever 100% digital donor record system. This technological leap streamlines administrative processes, improves accuracy, and enhances overall donor care.
