Transforming Sydney Cricket Ground into a world-class sports precinct.
The Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust had a vision for transforming the existing Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) into a world-class sports precinct. This included expanding the outdated pavilions and hospitality facilities, whilst catering for a diverse range of sporting audiences.
The Trust developed a masterplan to deliver several stages over several years, to minimise disruption to the annual sporting calendar, and allow for appropriate planning at all stages of the redevelopment.
The Trust engaged The APP Group to manage delivery of the first stage of the Sydney Cricket Ground redevelopment. This involved the transformation of the ‘Hill’ and the Doug Walters Stand into the new Victor Trumper Grandstand, incorporating:
- Improved public facilities and access
- More than 11,000 seats over three levels
- Disabled and removable seats
- Large public food court area
- 12 food and beverage outlets, including the new Doug Walters Bar
- Corporate function facilities and dining rooms.
Approximately four years after the completion of the Victor Trumper Grandstand, The APP Group was appointed on the second phase of the master-planned redevelopment – the delivery of a state-of-the-art pavilion on the northern side of the SCG. This Philip Cox-designed pavilion replaced the historic Noble, Bradman, and Messenger Stands. The $200 million facility houses advanced media facilities, corporate and members’ amenities, 700-seat dining room, and a lounge area with expansive views of the SCG field and the Sydney skyline.
The stand also incorporates a plaza, linking the SCG to the adjacent Allianz Stadium.
The APP Group took a leadership role in managing and coordinating the projects to satisfy all stakeholder requirements, whilst meeting the Trust’s expectations.
Harnessing our commercial expertise, we identified an unforeseen revenue stream during construction for both projects. We developed and implemented a delivery strategy to hand over the lower concourses to the Trust, while construction progressed n the remainder of the stands.
This enabled the Trust to offer patrons up to 4,000 seats, helping to generate additional revenue during construction. The Northern Pavilion had to be delivered to an extremely tight programme in readiness for the 2014 Ashes Tour. We developed a programme to ensure that all critical works met the deadline, completing the remaining work in stages throughout 2014 to accommodate the cricket and the Major League Baseball series.
Construction work also had to be scheduled around filming activity at the adjacent Fox Studios, which added to the complexity. We successfully negotiated a construction programme that satisfied both stakeholders.
The revitalised SCG seats a capacity crowd of approximately 46,700, and the Northern Pavilion won contractor AW Edwards a Master Builders Award for Excellence in Construction
